Roads Unwalked

This game requires dangerous materials. Please don’t burn yourself.

This is a game about the choices you didn’t make. You will need:

  • 6 index cards
  • 1 envelope
  • 1 pen
  • 1 fireproof bowl
  • 1 match
  • 1 cup of water

Place the six index cards before you and label them so:

  • Forest
  • Coast
  • Ruins
  • Mountain
  • Desert
  • Swamp

Leave space to draw.

Flip them over and shuffle them. Draw two, as if they were cards. Decide which terrain to explore, and which to leave behind. Place the rejected terrain in the envelope.

On the chosen terrain,

  • Draw something beautiful .
  • Draw something dangerous .
  • Draw something scary .
  • Draw something soft .

Repeat until you have three cards in the envelope.

Take the envelope of unexplored spaces and unraveled roads, and place it in the bowl. You did not walk these paths, and so you don’t get to know them. Burn them.

As the roads you might have traveled burn, contemplate your journey. If you regret your choice, put out the fire. You can draw maps on the burned cards, but it won’t be the same. If you are comfortable, let it burn out.
