This is a two-player microgame about a child seeking out the soul of their dead parent to find closure. It is inspired by Red Like Roses Pt. II by Jeff Williams, and was written for the Record Collection 2k19 game jam.
This is a game about reconnection for two players. One will play the Child, who in their mourning has ventured far and searched long to speak with their parent. The second player will play the Parent, long dead, who lingers out of guilt in the space between spaces.
Before you begin, review the prompts in each character’s section. The questions and goals are intended to drive play. If you’re coming into this game with your own story in mind, don’t be afraid to pursue it, even if it contradicts the examples given in the text below.
The game is played by asking and answering questions. The youngest player goes first, and play alternates from there. Either player may at any time sever the connection that allows you to talk beyond planes, and in doing so end the game.
The Child
What do you remember about your Parent?
What did you give up to have this conversation?
The Child should:
- Ask questions
- Share dreams of the future
The Child might:
- Acknowledge their accomplishments
- Seek hope
The Parent
What promise did you break?
What is your greatest regret?
The Parent should:
- Ask questions
- Share stories from the past
The Parent might:
- Acknowledge their shortcomings
- Seek peace
Last Rites
When you part, ask the other character how they feel about you. Regardless of the answer…
- The Child makes a promise to their Parent, for good or ill
- The Parent departs, either for final peace or writhing gloom.
